Ours is a charming, quintessential Cape Cod cottage - a beachfront cottage on Eel Pond in Monument Beach, in a residential neighborhood - peaceful, serene beauty awaits you! There are two bedrooms w/double beds, a futon in the den for additional sleeping (dble), and sofabed in the main room. The cottage can sleep 8, but is just right for 4-6 persons. The den has a fireplace w/stove insert. Fully equipped kitchen, bathroom w/shower. Outdoor shower (h/c) to wash off after enjoying a dip in the bay. Three kayaks at the cottage (2 single, 1 double) and a large canoe. The cottage has central AC/heat, and lovely summer cross-breezes off the bay provide ample fresh air, even on the warmest days. Housekeeping/linen service is provided prior to your arrival. A laundromat is conveniently located, just a mile away.
Our cottage is a perfect vacation home for a family with children! The kids can spend an entire day right on our beach, exploring all sorts of beach life at high and low tide, swimming, kayaking, and playing on the sand, while parents enjoy a glass of lemonade or iced tea on the screened porch that faces the beach, just 30 feet away.
Enjoy leisurely mornings on the bay-side screened porch, watching the water and the many sea and land birds as you sip your morning coffee. Dinners on the porch are equally delightful. The cottage comes equipped with a "kettle" charcoal grill, perfect for evening gatherings, and a fire pit for evening marshmallow roasts! We have three kayaks for guest use (1 dble/2 sgle), and you can swim in the bay from our private beach. Eel Pond is a tidal bay, with twice-daily high tides. Our bay leads out to another bay that boasts a large resident population of osprey. From the kayaks you can glimpse the fledgling osprey in their nests. Egrets, swans, and cormorants abound. Both bays are "no wake" waterways – no jet skis or motorboats will disturb the tranquility of your days at the cottage. If you venture a little farther out the interconnected bays, you can kayak right out to Buttermilk Bay and the Monument Beach marina. The town beach is a short walk down the road, about 1/4 mile, and just across from one of the best ice cream parlors on the Cape! Home-made ice cream, freshly made each day.
Monument Beach is a quiet village on the Cape's south shore, just minutes from the Bourne Bridge. Once over the bridge, you are there! With our cottage as your home base, you have many tourist options -- exploring the side roads and beautiful scenery on both sides of the Cape, or venturing off the Cape to Plymouth, Boston, or Newport RI. We are 20 minutes by car from Falmouth, where you can catch a ferry to the Islands (Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard) easily. Their quaint main streets boast many fine restaurants and great shops. Woods Hole, home to the world-renowned Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, is just down the road from Falmouth. The Cape Cod National Seashore is a quick drive down Route 6 where you can enjoy a whole day at one of their famous beaches with stunning sand dunes and impressive Atlantic Ocean surf. Shopping is close by in Mashpee or Sandwich, a very picturesque village – one of the oldest on the Cape. Be sure to visit the Sandwich Glass Museum, where you can watch a master craftsman demonstrate how glass is blown. A leisurely drive down Route 6A, which begins in Sandwich, will reward you with many shops and views of Cape Cod Bay.
We shop for our groceries in Sandwich at Fresh Market, but there is a great fish store & restaurant (the Lobster Trap) within walking distance of the cottage, with fresh daily catches of swordfish and other local fish for sale. Plenty of good inspiration for using the grill at the cottage! And you can always get fish&chips to go.
If you want to venture off-Cape for more sights and events, Plymouth is just 20 minutes north on Rte 3 with Plimoth Plantation, a living-history site, and the famous Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower, an authentic replica of the ship that brought the Pilgrims to Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1670. If you head a bit farther north on Route 3 you can take the "T" train from Quincy (about 40 minutes from the cottage door) into Boston's city center for a history-filled day on the Freedom Trail. Just south of the Cape is Newport, Rhode Island, with its notable tours of the luxurious mansions of the fabled American industrial barons - the Vanderbilts, the Astors, etal. Or visit New Bedford, with its first-class whaling museum, and Fairhaven, with its intriguing warship museums and great outlet stores.
In short, there is much to see and do on the Cape and just off the Cape - and our cottage can be your oasis of calm after a busy day full of events and sights. There is just something very special about our charming cottage. It has soaked up all the wonderful experiences of our many guests over the years, and its character and beauty will work its magic on you, as it does with everyone who stays there!
